|Community Spectrum – watercolor 2010|
We are all so many roles, so many different moods, attitudes, and talents, so many layers. From every experience we get to choose how and what we learn, what inspires, comforts, and helps us. It is all here for your growth. All these colors come from interaction, from participation. When influence permeates a barrier a new color is mixed. At our core we combine what we have filtered and reflect it back into the world. What you perceive, feel, see, try, observe. . .It all saturates together into your own light. Tend this light, protect it with your deepest values. Let this light shine and illuminate the world, let it be a light on someone’s journey, let it help someone else ignite their light. This is your community, this is how you belong.
As I was getting ready to graduate from Massage School I was unsure about how I wanted to pursue my massage career. One of my fellow classmates, knowing that I am an artist and visual person, told me to paint my business plan. I could immediately see connected circles and layers in yellow and purple. It took me several more months and a couple sketches to define the shape of my business plan. It wasn’t until I knew what my life priorities are that I was able to start painting. I painted the brightest circle as myself, each ring represents a layer of my personality. My center is my faith and being led by that, next is my relationship with my husband. I want to be sure that being a happy couple is before all my life plans. It took me a bit to realize that art comes before massage. Art is my calling and who I am. I will always be an artist no matter what I am doing or where. Massage, it turns out is 4th on my list of priorities. It is another extension of myself that I can help and serve others, literally put my hands on them to bring healing and comfort, it is something I must continue to practice and refine. The interesting thing is that once I finished the painting I realized I liked it better upside down, which is how it is displayed now. What does it mean to paint a symbolic picture upside down?
I don’t know how effective this is as a business plan but it has helped me to realize how I want to be and interact in a community. Whenever a massage or art opportunity comes up and I start tallying up the numbers I think about this painting and how does my profit compare to my contribution? There is a bigger picture than just making ends meet.
I love how this painting can be interpreted in so many ways. These rings of light can be businesses, towns, groups, or individuals. We can break it down to the interaction of neurons and illustrate how we are all part of something so much bigger. It reminds me that I am not alone, I am not so different from everyone else yet I am still unique and I have the power to influence and be influenced by what is around me. This painting warmly radiates that feeling of being connected to a bigger picture. I hope it will influence you and remind you that you affect those around you, you matter.
Do you see the same message? One of my friends Sophia Ojha, calls this painting 100 Suns. I really like that. It does seem like such a warm painting. This is for sale as a print at my Etsy store SparrowsHand. If you would like a smaller print size, please message me.
