Good afternoon all. This morning the first thing I saw was my clock telling me that it was 11:02. I was late for work. I ran off lickety split only to find that I had somehow set my clock ahead an hour when I had tried to reset my alarm. I was an hour early but I got to have a nice family meal and it was only after that that I found out that today is my extra day off.
See, the first Saturday of every month is an extra day of for the rest of the place. They call it town time. If you’re on town time you work 7:30-5:30 and get every Sunday off. DAs, Powerplant, Waterplant and maybe a few others aren’t on town time. Anyways, that makes it so that every week at least one DA gets an extra day off. Today is mine. I should have checked the schedule. So, to make the most of my day I took a walk around town and just tried to get a few pictures to give you an idea of how it’s laid out. I am going to just put them up with some simple captions (hopefully) I don’t want to spend my entire day on the computer.
Above Left: the various waste bins across the street.
Above Right: A statue that I was asked to bring from Alaska and leave here. I took some pictures with it and plan to send them to Yukon Jack, the one that carved it.
BelowLeft: A better picture of a pickle. Really look at the shadows in these pictures. It’s amazing. I was taking pictures from about 12:00-2:00.
Below Right: too bad these pictures are so small but this is a good variety of vehicles parked.
top right: A line of trucks do you see the cable strung across the top to plug them all in? They have to be plugged in at ALL times or left running.
Right and below: the clinic.
top right: the yellow building is 155. The big main building where I work in the Galley
right: A McMurdo Fire hydrant. Way off in the background there is a tiny bump on the hill. That’s a memorial to an explorer that slipped off the edge of that. That is also part of the Hut Ridge Trail. You must check out with the firehouse to go.
left:A great picture of our shadows. The building that you can barely see are from the left, Southern (the bar), Crary which is something about science, and Acey Duecy aka the Gerbal Gym with all the tread mills.
Top right: That’s the Gerbal Gym with a kiwi truck from Scott Base parked in front. I thought the “kiwi parking only” signs were a joke but I realized today that they would have differant plug-ins.
Below left: Bertha, the dishwasher and Simone running the dish room.
below right: A glimpse of the dining hall. The buffet tables are through the big doorway. You might be able to make out Emily sweeping. If you continues straight back you would go through to the kitchen.
below left: Ceasar boiling potatos. That vat he’s fishing in is the kind that people have been rumored to have used as hot tubs.
That’s all for now.
