Tonight is my last night in Ecuador! Can you believe it? I can´t, I thought I wasn´t flying out till Thursday. Don´t know what I was thinking.
Anyways, Coyote, Blevins, and I got to take the night bus up to Quito. We were entertained by some American B-rated movie dubbed over in Spanish. It was called ¨Snake Man¨ with Stephen Baldwin. It was. . . crappy. Then I got to try to sleep on the bus and we arrived in Quito around 6:00 am.
Peace Corps volanteers are not allowed to be in the touristy area of Quito. It´s too “unsafe”. So they stay a few blocks away and walk on down to the spot I am at now. Being here has really made me appreciate my experiances with Benito and Coyote. I was sort of talking to sound good about seeing the country and getting off the tourist track. The thing is, I was never on the tourist track until now and what a differance! They have all the American fast food here, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Burger King, Baskin Robbins, I don´t need to mention McDonald´s you can never escape that place.
I hung out at the Peace Corps compound, it made me think of an embassy or something. I had to hand over my passport just to go in. Eventually I met another Peace Corps girl. Turns out she´s from Minnesota! Somewhere not far from Hutchinson. Armore? No, Arlington. I kept getting thrown through a loop because she looked so much like Charity, those huge eyes, same mouth but she was so loud. She really isn´t but Charity is so quiet I kept doing doubletakes. Hi, Charity.
There´s not much to tell about the city. It´s sketchy I guess. I´ve had all the Peace Corps stuff drilled into me and now that I am ready to go home I have been spending money like crazy. I´m sitting here with my cafe con leche. A very important phrase to know down here, coffee with milk.
I wandered, did some impressive haggling and souvenier shopping (oneday I will know how to spell that word correctly). I have moved out of the $26/night hostal to the Iguana Lodge, $8. Nice. I did get the Peace Corps discount, half price at the other place. Nice. Now all I have to worry about is getting up at 5:00 tomorrow. Wish me luck. I am excited to get home though. That should help. The clincher for staying at the Iguana Lodge was the fact that the bathroom shower curtain is a scene of penguins on ice flows, how ironic is that?
All right, I´m outta here.
