Art Show at the Looking Glass Cafe

October 2, 2009 by Rachael Shores

Hey All,
This post is of my art show that I had in October. I wasn’t able to post it till now so here you go. For those of you that don’t remember the story, Becky was my financial backer for a deal on art supplies that I found but couldn’t afford when I first moved to NC. She bought 100 sheets of watercolor paper and in return I painted about a dozen pictures so that she could choose two as payment. It all went into a show so what you have here is a bunch of pictures for an assertive, stylish lawyer in Kentucky. This is what I came up with in trying to decorate her home and office.

For those of you that weren’t around for this I have posted my art show. I’ve taken pictures of the art framed and on the wall. There’s detailed pictures and pictures to try to show size and perspective.

Sequense (yes, I purposely misspelled it), was a trial run to make Fallin Spectrum. Becky chose sequence as one of her paintings for payment.

Falling Spectrum is the last picture that I painted. Becky sent me a picture of a painting she liked and I did my best to mimic it. I got the fall scenery but I ended up with much brighter colors than I think she was looking for. I really like this painting though. There’s just so much color and texture in it. A photo doesn’t really do it justice. One day I’ll do a whole series like this. How perfect is it that this is the painting that Becky absolutely loved? That’s how it has to be. This was a process to create what Becky wanted, and that’s what I ended with.
furlough

The cafe owner said she liked this one displayed next to the fish tank so when I came to pick up my art after the show I gave it to her. One less to transport and it was my first show. It was the thing to do. The owner of the Looking Glass Cafe was inspiring. She’s 22 or 23 and she’s wanted to own a coffee shop all her life, and here she is. Can you believe it? She told me she wanted to own a coffee shop since she was 11. Here’s to following dreams!

beyond fences

detail
These turned out to look really cool once they were framed. It looks very artsy and abstract. I can even see it having some meaning. I called it “beyond fences” because I was trying to incorporate the geometric pattern of fence lines. I ended up grouping these pictures together because I used the same techniques. Once they were arranged it made me think of breaking past barriers and into more randomness. Climb that corporate ladder, break free of structure, live your own life. Do you think that’s what the paintings say? Or is that just what’s on my mind?

So, in the end I had success. Becky loved the paintings and even bought two more. She took the two paintings of trees and the two large paintings in the group of three. Once she saw them in person she did like them for her office. GOOD! I hope you send me pictures of your office and home, Becky.
