|Writing in Latin: Business in the Front, Party in the Back. I call this painting The Way, the Truth, and the Mullet. Sold in 2009.|
|Vinyl Mullet – 20×20, vinyl and tape.|
When I got the call from the Beehive announcing that my picture had won, I didn’t even know which one had won till I went to pick up my $100 gift certificate. Not only had I won first place but the the Beehive ladies had to draw straws to figure out who got to purchase my little 8×10 piece of sacrilegious art. As they laughed and talked about the novelty of it I began to see Bible verses and mullets conjure in my head. They liked my art??? There is SO much more where that came from. I went straight home to my roommate and we talked about iconic paintings and mullet puns. She had a Catholic and Latin background and in moments I had gone from one tentative painting to at least 7 ideas. I could do a whole series! The Beehive was keen on hosting my whole mullet series at their shop.
It has been over 2 years since I claimed my prize. The end of 2011 is finally upon us and I decided that 2012 has to be the year of the mullet. The big year of it’s unveiling. I asked about available slots to have a show and the response was that the only available show dates would be January and February of 2012. Guess what, don’t tell Beehive, but I had not painted a single painting when I had asked about available show slots. I was just securing a slot. I had 3 weeks to paint my 7 pieces, in which time there would also be x-mas, company visiting, and I have work as well. I was typing out my decline of these dates, saying I wouldn’t be ready in time when a wild haired idea began to frizz out. Did I really need more time??? I had all the frames already, I had the Latin translations already -thanks to Marielle the previous summer, a home schooler who happened to take Latin. Fantastic! I had several ideas to start on. This could actually work. So, for the last 2 weeks I have been getting up at 6:30 to paint as much as I can before company woke up or before I had to go to work. I am still in the process of the last 3 but I have all of this week to work on them. Wish me luck! I’ll be sharing a painting every Monday as my virtual show on my blog.
Save the date! Sacred Mullets will be on display at the Beehive Hair Salon January 3 thru the end of February. If you can make it please come to the second Friday Art Walk on February 10. If you can’t make it out to celebrate with me on the 10th then stop by at any point while it is up. Good times! Also, I will be having prints up for sale on my Etsy store. Some will be available January 9 but some you’ll have to wait till after the show to have available.
