Good afternoon. It’s about time for supper but I just got up at 2:20 and I’m not hungry yet. I love days off. I have been relaxing all day. Actually, I have been gathering the last details of my darkness costume. I am so excited. I really hope it works out. I think I told you about it last week. I just need the make-up to work out.
Anyways, I went looking through for pictures this week but I really didn’t find any. I just have ones from the Coffee House night. This week was full of acitivity but it was mostly me keeping myself busy. Troy has inspired a bunch of people to commit to work out 3 times a week. There’s enough people so that no matter how many miss out there is at least one other person to greet you at 6 in the morning.
Monday we had a reality check about the cold. We were unloading food on the back dock of the kitcken at about -35 below. We had a good laugh as we brought stuff into the walk-in freezer and got to marvel at how warm it was, I think the freezer is at 10 degrees.
Guess what! I had 3 Thai Massages this week! Not only that but Cora brought me some Gregorian chants. I’m iffy about Gregorian chants. I don’t know what they are, who sings them or what they are saying but the Chapel has a PA system and the music reverbriates through the whole place, like you’re surrounded by monks. It’s an awesome way to give a massage. People are tipping me as well! I didn’t know that was done. Awesome.
Some bad news, did I tell you that Emily got added to the injury list? Then Simone’s shoulder spazzed out. Simone is already on the restricted work list but her shoulder put her out of commision for a couple days. Then Troy came in on Tuesday with his hand in a brace. He whacked it real good with a wrench when we were General Assistants last week. He told how X-Rays had shown that it had broken. I took a deep breath as I tried not to freak out. He and Emily are the most reliable and fastest workers. I love it when I am teamed up with either of them. I was suddenly feeling very isolated. It was only after work that Troy told me he was fine and was just faking everyone out. Little turd. He did bruise his bone but his hand is fine. It’s interesting to know that Medical had helped him pull the prank off, after the check-up they gave him a brace to help him sell his story. Poor Angie has been working 12 hr days for nearly a week, Troy was really looking forward to freaking her out.
He got a taste of his own medicine the next day though. After making everyone feel all sorry for him the day before, he went home sick and I didn’t believe him. He had internal bleeding or something. He’s still recovering, that was on Wednesday. Schedules had to be changed around for all the injuries that fell on us. I panicked when I found out that I was supposed to change my day around on Thursday. Last week Troy got to talking with the Rec people and they put us all on a sign-up for Scott Base dinner. Have I told you about that? Scott Base is the New Zealand base with 14 winter overs. Every Thursday they have American Night and open the place up to us. They have a store and a bar. I think drinks are $2 or something. It’s just crazy. Anyways, they also have a sign up with 10 spaces for McMurdo people to come for dinner. They have an excellant cook. The way it goes is that friends plan out who they would like to go to dinner with and one person camps outside the Rec door for when the sign up is posted each week. The list is always filled instanty and I have never bothered even trying to go until I was kindly put on the list last week. This week there were two people almost ready to start fighting about which group would be having dinner this week. It was crazy, it’s just a dinner people! Luckily for me, Sandy was kind enough to switch shifts so that I could go to Scott Base. It was a lovely meal. We actually sat and passed the bowls of food around. Lovely. Made me think of home.
Wed. was my ambitious day. I did the 6am workout, then shoveled for Mandy so that she will cover for me for an hour in the evening so I can go to an excercise class. It makes for a longer day for both of us but we get what we want. Anyways, I came out on Wednesday morning to the aftermath of a condition 2 snowstorm. Wow. Every doorway was under nearly a foot of snow. It really did take a good hour to shovel everything. I went straight from that to do a Thai Massage and from that I had enough time to go to work. At 6:00 I went to the excersize class and was driven into the ground with all sorts of bizarre drills. Lisa is the PT and seems to make up crazy excersizes for people to try and utterly fail at. It’s all about coordination, sort of like rub your stomach and pat your head.
Anyways, I was SO sore the next day. So sore (which way is the proper spelling?). Anyways, I had a great Biblestudy discussion with the girls, watched Monty Python skits with Jana and Sky. This past week I have watched the Blue Ballers play against the Firehouse in bowling, got another awesome shirt from Skua and it sounds like I get to begin learning Kung-Fu this week. So exciting. The thing about Skua though is that I have so far gotten 2 shirts from there and they are both variations of a long-john shirt. All my shirts are long john shirts, that or duofold which is close enough.
This week I also had a meeting with Simone, it’s just sort of a one on one check-up of how we have been doing. Everyday we have to record exactly what we did to fill our time – allocations. It’s down to the quarter hour. This is how they can track how much man-power a job takes and why people may be getting injured. Anyways, I was glad to learn that I have been doing above average for the hours spent in the pot and dish room and I am still uninjured. We have also been told to start documenting our good deeds we do. It’s called shameless self-promotion because later on we’ll have to prove what a great worker we were with documented instances. We can also do it for each other, those are called attaboys. Now I keep track of all the good things done every week and send them in to be filed. It actually helps make the days very posative.
Poor Emily was just put in a more restrictive shoulder brace. It’s not so much her restricted movement but the positioning of the straps. One goes across the top of her chest and one goes under her breasts. She’s not a small girl to begin with and now she’s banded and strapped with torpedos jutting out at everybody.
Last night was Friday Girl Night again. I had Yoga and did a massage first. Afterwards I found the girls huddled in the lounge watching Bridget Jones Diary surrounded by all sorts of chocolates, as well as cocoa with peppermint schnapps, cackling at any hapless guy that happened to stumble in. It is just so nice to talk all girly. Have I been missing out on that? It really energizes me to talk about fears and self doubts or attractive guys or whatever that just seems to be on my mind but have a hard time finding an appropriate place to vent. These girls have no inhibitions and have the same concerns and what-not. I’m sorry to be so vague. I can give you one example. One girl was saying one night how she thinks a guy that can jump over a fence is just the hottest thing. You know, one of those one handed vaults. I mention this example because the very next day I found a cologne add on the back of a magazine. It’s a guy in mid air in a one handed vault over a wall, he’s looking right at the camera, you know, regular advertising. I immediately taped that on her door and she got a little flutter and the surprise the next morning when she headed to work.
Speaking of surprises, this week’s fake dedications from the Galley were “I don’t care who you are” by the Backstreet Boys to Jana from Shane, immediately followed by “I will Survive” sung by Cake for Shane from his real girlfriend Larissa. It only went downhill from there but it’s pretty creative the songs that people find to relate to each other. Emily keeps a list and I am starting the same.
Oh well, it is time for me to get going. I hope to put up pictures from the party right away tomorrow.
