Hi wonderful people,
I have some news for you. Long story short: After a night of talking, my husband and I have decided to sell everything we own and move to Germany.
This whole crazy idea started a few months ago and then we started taking steps to make it happen and guess what! I sold my massage business! I sold it to a wonderful lady named Michaela. I posted my business for sale on Craigslist. She saw the ad the night I posted and she contacted me the next day. The next week she agreed to buy my entire business. She’s taking over my lease, all my massage supplies and I am simply walking away. She’s actually currently a massage student and she asked me to mentor her so once a week we meet up, have a volunteer and I show her everything I’ve learned. I’ve condensed 6 years of massage and lessons into a couple weeks of lessons.
TODAY is a big day for me. Today is my last day as a massage therapist. I put my notice in to the county that my business is closed, I say goodbye to my last clients and then it’s on to packing. Last night I sent off lots of my stuff to friends. We went through books, clothes, and the kitchen. In a couple weeks we will have a garage sale. At the end of April we move out of Roanoke and in with my father-in-law. MAY 22 we fly out or Raleigh to MUNICH Germany. Yes, Jason’s goal is to find a job and live in Munich. We’ve been taking German lessons. AND HE DOESN’T HAVE A JOB…yet.
WHY are we doing this? Because this has been Jason’s life long dream and he doesn’t care that much for Roanoke. Jason has wanted to do this since college and recently we were talking about our settled life in Roanoke and where we were headed and what is next and that is when Jason reminded me that he still wanted to live and work overseas. I’m not sure, I don’t think I really thought he was serious about wanting to live and work abroad. He would mention it here or there but, you know, people are usually all talk, especially about crazy adventures like that. At the end of last year I finally realized that my husband was serious about this being an actual big dream of his. “Of course” we couldn’t go because he has such a great job but after some reflection I realized that in all my travels a good job NEVER factored in to whether I would travel or not. Travel and adventure was always the NUMBER ONE priority. There are always good jobs but at what point would we ever take the opportunity to go overseas? Why not now? We are at the perfect place. We are only renting, we have only collected a handful of things, our stuff isn’t that valuable, it has all come from Craigslist. We are both saddest about selling our cars. We both have our dream cars right now….for sale: 2006 Subaru Outback 162,000 miles $6000… and a 2013 Subaru BRZ 48,000 miles $18,000.
SO, the plan is that Jason has been applying to jobs in Munich like crazy. Last night he also found several upcoming job fairs in Munich that he’s scheduling himself to go to. We’ve signed up for an intensive German course, we’re in contact with friends of friends in Munich, and we’re looking for extended stay housing. Three months after we arrive in Germany we fly back at the end of August, we fly back and stay with friends in Charleston so we can see the solar eclipse. So basically we have 3 months for Jason to find a job. This way we have 3 months to take care of all the important life details and then we can haul another load of stuff from the States to Germany. If he doesn’t have a job by the end of August we will stay in the States with most of our money spent and we will look for a job elsewhere. Jason has contacts in Oregon and that’s an alternate option he’s hoping for. Worst case scenario we will live with his dad while Jason finds work in Raleigh and we will build our finances back up till we decide where we want to relocate to. Another idea is to apply for jobs all over Europe. We’re willing to live anywhere.
What is my big dream? I’ve looked into massage in Germany and although it’s not technically illegal for me to do massage it’s highly unlikely that I will be hired for massage without Germany’s 2 year program/degree. I’m not sure what it’s called. My plan is to apply to jobs at the consulate BUT…What I really want to do is art. I want to paint. I want to inspire. I want to travel and then blog about it. So, next blog I will tell you all about my career plans. Maybe you will have some ideas for me. Wish me luck! Do you have any advice, travel tips, job leads? Please comment!
