We all need positive quotes or inspirational quotes sometimes. Here’s one of my favorites, I have it in my e-mail signature :
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” -Howard Thurman
I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what I’m “supposed” to be doing. When I’ve asked myself what I “should” do I look to mentor figures. I’ve looked to a lot of people and I’ve gotten a different answer from so many. Here’s just a few things I’ve considered because someone else said I should: I should be a nurse, wear a head covering, join 12 Tribes, have kids, be a teacher, be a physical therapist, go to college. . . how many did I miss?
What shoulds have you heard? Do you still have one’s that have you feeling guilty? Here’s something I just figured out last week; I believed that if I admired someone I should be emulating everything they do. This has caused me a lot of grief because I greatly admire my mother and my mother-in-law. My mom had 3 kids by the time she was 23 and kept a clean home and cooked our meals almost every night. My mother-in-law is an ENT surgeon that works 60 hrs a week and LOVES her job. Looking at these 2 fantastic women I have utterly failed to follow either of their paths.
Don’t get confused about copying vs emulating.
Here’s today’s reminders:
- Do what you love
- Do what makes you come alive
- Be grateful where you are at and how far you have come
- Be thankful for the roll models you have around you
- Look to follow your roll models’ outlooks on life, their world view, their attitude
And I have to include a quote from my favorite person to quote, Mark Twain:
“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”
Your assignment for next time: meet up with someone that inspires you to do your best and follow your dreams. Maybe this is someone you know or just someone you admire. Who inspires you?
