Thursday I got to hear the exciting news about one of the firefighters. He checked out to go to the A-frame which is a barely heated rustic cabin a few miles out of McMurdo. I think of it as a honeymoon cabin, pretty much only couples go there. It’s like “getting out”. Anyways, one of the firefighters went out solo. I’m not sure how protocal goes but there’s various check-in times when you radio back to dispatch and let them know you are all right, if you don’t call they send out the SARS. Well, having just gotten off night shift he over slept and SARS got a little training getting all geared up ready to go out and see what was up, a whole bunch of people got involved and 2 min. before the Piston Bulleys were to head out he called in.
So, what happens then. A firefighter that doesn’t follow check-in rules, riles up his buddies and part of the town? A photo of his head got super-imposed on a Radio movie poster which was hung all over the halls. Very sweet.
Another morale booster, there’s about 3 people on base following the World Cup. When Emily found out how much Jana was against Italy she did what any good friend would do and hung an Italian flag high above the Galley doorway. So sweet.
