I just had my last two day weekend. Last week was everyone else’s last time and now it was my turn. I was really lucky too because the Art Show ended up on this Sunday. I think I found my next pair of travel earings at one of the booths, the only Fleet Ops girl (the ones that drive the huge front end loaders and what-not) also makes beautiful jewelry. I didn’t have any art to really show except a nalgene poster that I have been working on nearly all season. I’ve been getting a picture of each person’s nalgene on a bucket/pedistal with their name written underneath it. You might be surprised how much a water bottle reflects a personality.
Saturday was also crazy. It was another polar plunge. They cut a big hole in the ice and we jumped in. It was really easy this time compared to the midwinter plunge. On that one I was told it was 36 below when we were out jumping buck naked into 30 degree water. Last time one person went out at a time, jumped in and high tailed it back to the warming hut where people had the door open and ready to welcome spewing words of profanity. This time people stood around the hole in a wool blanket watching the activity before and after jumping in themselves. Kinda like a lost Woodstock audience. I only went in once but this time I tried to see how long I could stay in. I wish I had a stop watch! It wasn’t the most relaxing thing to do, afterwards I couldn’t feel my fingers for a few long minutes, let alone use them, and once feeling did come back it wasn’t nice.
The night life was very eventful. There was table traversing going all night at Scott Base. What is table traversing? Well, it looks pretty silly but it’s seriouse stuff. I guess it’s a climbers’ bar game. You take a long table, start by laying on top of it then slide off, hang underneath and pull yourself up the other side. You go around the length of the table without touching the ground. I never got it. I came close but when the guys were saying to “just” push off with my hands I was watching my hands as my body slowly sank away from them. I guess I will have another chance on Thursday but we’ll see.
No more fun DA schedule. From now on I am a morning person. Good one. Up at 5:50 to be at work at 6:00. Ugh. At least I get off at 4:00. I am hoping to be useful with my time and to get things done, like pack. AUGUST 26. The day I leave! Wow.
