The other day I had a client tell me I should start teaching what I believe in. I’m not sure what that means or how to go about doing that. I don’t know if it’s pertinent, appropriate, necessary, accurate. This is how I see things and this is how I process things and this is what I’ve been thinking about enough to write down and share it. I’m speaking from love and enthusiasm, I hope that’s how I come across.
“In the beginning there was The Word, and the Word was with God and The Word was God.” – John 1:1
In the beginning I imagine there was emptiness, nothing, peace, tranquility. “Nothing” is beyond my comprehension. How can we be aware of nothing? Before there was the universe, before there was matter – or has there always been matter? What IS nothing? At what point are we at the beginning? I do believe in God so I do believe He dwelled in emptiness for a long time. It could be considered a time of rest. If we are made in God’s image then I think the reason he began creating in the first place is because he got tired of being alone. In that emptiness when He spoke He created. Maybe God speaking was the big bang. What does it mean to speak? Is it the audio? When is audio just noise? Is it words? Language? Is the basis of speaking communicating?
I think what is beautiful about the Bible is how it can be interpreted so poetically. I also find it interesting the emphasis of the breath of God, the breath of life, the breath of the Holy Spirit and how breath is integral to speaking. Here is a video on speech. I’m sure there are lots of ways to have fun with analogies. I’m already thinking about the importance of vibration and when it’s mentioned in the Bible, I think the word would be “tremble” and there’s lots of mention about the earth trembling and trembling at the presence of God…breath of life?
In Sunday school we were taught the importance and the power of God’s word. He spoke and the world was created. His final creation was to make man in His image and then breathe life into him. That is where the Sunday lessons stopped. Isn’t it interesting that God spoke and commanded all things into existence and then formed man out of clay before breathing life into him? God gave us breath, and the power to speak for ourselves and the power to create by speaking what we want. In the church they call it prayer, in new age they call it mantras and manifesting, you can make a wish, you can cast a spell, in so many cultures there is this magic in the voice and what we might be able to accomplish by saying some words. Does it really work?…I WANT A MILLION DOLLARS…I’ll let you know how that turns out in my next post.
What I find fascinating about language is that a word can change the perception of a story or authority. I was trying to think of what to call myself for this article. “Words from a _____” Artist? Crazy person? Religious nut? Spiritual thinker? Massage therapist? Blonde? Woman? Follower? Student? I feel like I’m a little of all these things but choosing just one as my label really limits me and how what I say might be perceived. Even beginning this article with a Bible quote I felt would estrange a large portion of my audience. I’m sorry to the non-church people. The Bible was engrained in me from a young age and I studied because I believed it was the most important book in the world. I still believe it’s the most important book in my world. I still use it’s verses to guide my thoughts whenever I have questions but I really love the intriguing parts of it. Yes, I do have my favorite parts that I focus on. I like to avoid the chapters about commanded stonings. As an artist I LOVE symbolism and analogies and the Bible is rife with all that. Every verse can be interpreted and seen from a different way. Yes, you can use the same verse to “prove” opposite points. I’m not going to get into arguing philosophy. I wanted to talk about the power of our word.
If we are made like God and have even a shred of ability to manifest by speaking what we want then that is a wonderful thing. I believe that your words matter. I’ve believed this for a long time. I do it in the form of prayer. I identify what I want and ask for it. I see prayer a little differently. I talk about “shining our light” a lot. I love that visualization. Every person is a sliver representation of God. Whether we know it or not, whether we accept it or not, whether we ask for it or not. Everyone has the ability to create and everyone creates their reality whether we realize it or not. For today’s lesson we will not talk about starving children or those fighting cancer. I don’t believe people bring tragedy into their lives and I haven’t tried to put into words why I believe there is suffering in this world. I do believe we have the ability to make something from nothing.
“Let your yes be yes and your no be no” – James 5:12
Yes, I just snuck in another Bible verse. So here’s my train of thought:
- God’s word was at the beginning
- By speaking, God brought the universe and all that we know into existence
- God created us in His image
- He breathed into us the breath of life
- Breath is an important part of speech
- Part of being in God’s image is we have the ability to create from nothing on a smaller scale
Therefore…here comes my leap…In order for us to create the biggest results in our lives we have to begin by honoring our word to ourselves. You are in the image of God. Why don’t you follow through and take care of yourself the best ways you know how? Make plans and keep them, do what makes you happy, say you will do something and then do it.
My main question is how can you consider yourself a good person, of strong character, righteous, generous, patient, loving, gentle, valiant, etc. Whatever your goal is, however you want to be in your life. You HAVE to be that TO YOURSELF. First. YOU are the first person you spent time with. You have spent more time with yourself than with anyone else. If you want to BE a certain way you have to live and breathe that way beginning in the little areas. What step are you going to take to honor yourself and keep your word? How will you live as an example to others to show your worth? Be your word. Begin with you.
