You Tube Debut

December 20, 2012 by Rachael Shores

I had a very interesting day earlier this fall.  It started with finishing up a week long retreat in the mountains of South Western NC.  It was an amazing time of reflection in nature, perfect weather, no electronics.  A time to think about the harvest of the year.  I did art, appreciated art, sold art, and did some massages, I’m also a licensed massage therapist.
I love these trees!  I see a painting coming on

Meditation Rock

My favorite hang out, rocking chairs on a porch under a tree.  This is also where I offered Thai Massage.
The retreat ended on a Sunday and I hurried off the mountain to get back to Asheville in order to participate in “1000 Easels.” A day where the artists come out to paint in the community.

The coordinator was super sweet and easy going.  By the time I arrived from The Mountain I was an hour late.  She let me pick my own spot so I asked to be on the corner near my gallery, Zapow! (shameless plug:  click here to order my prints) I went in, borrowed a folding chair and got to work on my typical small travel art with my standard travel set.

I happened to have prints left over from my week at the retreat so I let them sit out while I painted. I mostly gave tourists directions which was nice in itself, it shows I’m learning Asheville.  Part of the reason I had selected this street corner is because it’s about the only street corner I know the street names of.  I actually sold a print to a passerby, talked to other artists, and a guy with a camera came by and asked to film me.  A 10 minute video of someone painting?  How boring is that?  I wish I would have known how well his microphone would have picked up sound, I would have told a story while I painted.

I finished up my painting, a great time to reflect about my art and my women’s retreat, and when I walked back into Zapow I was greeted with . . .
Zombies
Well, what else can you expect in the middle of October?  I don’t know.  There was some dedicated costumes and they were very willing to pose.  Thanks guys!  Whoever you are.
another day at Zapow

So, if you feel like watching a video of me painting think about this story that I would have told if I had the chance:
When I was hiking on the Appalachian Trail I took a little side trail for a place that sold ice cream.  It wasn’t open yet but I’ll stop any time for ice cream.  I was on a tight budget/unwilling to pay money for ice cream so I worked on a painting of the business.

The building was rather plain so I focused on the background, made the sign bigger and more evident, added people, etc.  Then I went in and asked for a trade, 2 scoops of ice cream – maybe it was 4 scoops.  It’s a fairly low price for a painting but my pleasure in having an ice cream break while hiking made it an even trade.  Even better, the lady working there was so happy about my ability (not that impressive now that I look at this) that she offered me $20 to paint her brand new Vespa that she was so proud of.    I did a much better job and she felt so bad about how long it took that she gave me another $10.  Woohoo!
